Little update

It's Diane. I'm here for just a couple of hours. The speech therapist came in again, but she still couldn't get Dad to wake up enough to work with him and do a more thorough evaluation. He did wave good-bye to Karen, so he better duplicate that for me when I leave. The speech therapist said sleep is good, it gives the brain a chance to heal.

About a half hour after she left, Dad suddenly woke up and seemed very alert. I said hi to him, and he said, "Hi, Diane. How are you?" It wasn't perfectly clear, but it was definitely understandable. I talked to him for a few minutes about basketball, that BYU has another game in a few days, that even though we don't cheer for the University of Utah in sports, they do have a pretty good hospital. I asked him if he wanted some apple juice and he said yes. I used the sponge to feed him most of the rest of the apple nectar/Spam jelly concoction. ;) He did a great job. Now he's sleeping again.

A couple of people have asked what specific things they can be praying for. Right now, the therapists want to see Dad waking up and eating enough that he won't have to have a feeding tube. He showed yesterday that he can swallow well enough, but he has hardly taken anything in all day. So prayers in that direction would be much appreciated.

Mom just got here and Dad's waking up again. I'll post again soon. Or if I don't, someone will.
